3 Tips for Cheap Travel

Now that quarantine is winding down and we will hopefully be able to travel ASAP, you need to know how to get the BEST deals and how to travel for cheap!

HOW WAS I ABLE TO TAKE A WEEKEND GETAWAY TO HAWAII WHILE IN COLLEGE?

So I have gotten this question about a million times, even from people I don’t know! And if I had a dollar for every time I got that question, I could take another trip to Hawaii! People just think it is so insane to get to travel often, but what I think they don’t realize is, TRAVEL DOESN’T HAVE TO BREAK THE BANK! I know that may seem crazy, but seriously, it doesn’t. So I’m going to give you my 3 best tips (plus a few) about traveling cheap, you may have heard of them, maybe not, but here it goes:

FLY USING SPIRIT AIRLINES

I know it doesn’t sound luxurious by any means to fly on Spirit, but especially if you’re flying somewhere a few states away, a Spirit flight is not going to make or break your trip. If you fly a different airlines, it may break your bank. Also if you go to Spirit in person during certain hours to buy your tickets, it takes off many of the service fees (taking each ticket down about $100!) The flight will be one of your largest expenses for the trip, so be wise and use the money you may have used to upgrade your seat somewhere else on the trip!

STAY AT AN AIRBNB

A hotel is going to be another HUGE expense on the trip (especially if you’re staying for a long period of time). AirBnb has so many options all around the world, and they can be SO much more affordable. Especially if you’re traveling with a large group, you can stay at a house/beach house that fits 10+ people for just about the same price as one hotel room (which won’t fit 10+ people comfortably). So just hop on AirBnb, type in your location, add your filters and sort lowest to highest price! It might not be the 4 seasons, but you won’t be staying in your hotel/AirBnb for the whole trip anyways!

This picture is of the AirBnb my 10 friends and I stayed in in Galveston and it came out to be only $35 a person for 2 nights!

RENT A CAR USING TURO

I have used Uber religiously on MANY occasions, and sometimes, that’s necessary (like in Vegas or NYC where it’s hard to park cars). But if you want to rent a car, or go a far distance from where you’re staying at you’re own time, USE TURO! Turo is basically an AirBnb app, but for cars. You can rent a local’s car for the day, the week, etc. and it comes out to be MUCH cheaper than Ubering everywhere.

And if you want to be boujie, you can rent more expensive cars like Teslas, but of course, that defeats the “cheap” purpose.

EXTRA TIPS:

  • I look at flights using the app: Hopper. It tells you the best times to purchase your tickets and which airlines have the best price for that trip. It also helps if you’re flexible on dates to let you know which dates will be the cheapest to fly. It also lets you figure out if there are any flight/hotel packages available for your trip!

  • Getting a credit card with whatever airlines you typically fly will help you get rewards points. So it can be on everyday purchases like: Gas, certain restaurants, etc. that earn you reward points, which can go toward future flights and hotels!

I hope this helps! And as always, if you have any questions, please comment below and I’d love to help!
